The annual powderpuff football game brought excitement and school spirit to the field Monday night as the junior class faced off against the seniors in a highly anticipated matchup. With a large crowd, both teams were eager to claim bragging rights.
From the opening kickoff, the atmosphere was tense. The seniors, playing in their final powderpuff game, wanted to prove themselves and win due to their defeat as juniors last year. On the other side, the juniors came in determined, eager to prove themselves and build momentum for the following year.
“I am pretty nervous, just because they’re pretty tough, and they’ve played before,” junior Makayla Rudsell said. “And I’m a dancer, so I don’t do that kind of action, but that’s why I’m nervous, because I don’t really do head-on action.”
The pressure was not only on for the players, but the coaches as well. Both teams were student-led by football players and most coaches were new to making plays that would work well. But teamwork and coordination caused the game to go much better for the seniors compared to last year.
“This was great, much better than last year,” senior De’marcus Davis said. “We lost last year because the players didn’t really listen to us as much as they should have, but this year we had a smaller group, and everybody on the team listened and did what they were told and followed what I coached, so I feel like that’s what made a big difference to me.”
Although the seniors had a rough start after letting the juniors score the first point, they regained speed and caught up soon afterward. Despite the juniors’ effort, the seniors maintained their lead and executed plays with precision. Key concentration prevented the juniors from gaining momentum in the second half.
“This year was a lot more positive than last year,” senior Mia Brandl said. “Last year, it was pretty cutthroat. At the end of the game last year, everyone was fighting. It was a lot better this year. So, it was really fun. It was a positive experience.”
As the final whistle blew, the seniors emerged victorious, celebrating their win with everyone. The game ended with good sportsmanship on both sides, as players congratulated each other on a tough contest.
