Staff Stance: Technology in classroom impedes learning
With the continuation of mLISD, many classes are either incorporating more technology or going all technology-based.
Last year, chemistry students used a mix of online materials and physical materials. This year, the chemistry department has gone all online and are using things such as online quizzes, digital INBs, and at-home video notes.
While some students are benefiting from the increased use of technology, others are not. This raises the question as to how much technology we should be using in classrooms.
There are three types of students; those who learn best digitally, those who learn best physically, and those who learn best with a mix of the two.
According to a poll done in Ms.Tanzer’s chemistry classes with 80 students, only 5 percent of her students learn best with all tech classes. The mass majority prefer either all paper (41.3 percent) or a mix of the two (53.8 percent).
50 percent of students said that they would like a more physical and paper-based learning environment in their classes.
Based on this, a change in how we have begun to teach is necessary for the future success of students and our school as a whole.
