It runs in the family, at least that’s what freshman Kellen Abbott says.
Abbott is involved with the JROTC program, he sub campuses to Rouse for the practices and hopes to enlist in the military after graduation. JROTC is a class focused on teaching the fundamentals and traditions that prepare students for their service in the military.
“I joined JROTC because I wanted to go in the military,” freshman Kellen Abbott said. “But only two percent of our cadets actually go in.”
Most of Abbott’s family enlisted in the Navy or Army. He wishes to follow in their footsteps
“We have our academic days where we will learn about ships and we will practice our orders of the centrifuge,” Abbott said. “We learn what we need to rank up.”
Students participate in the program in order to receive credit and training for the branch of military they wish to join. Sophomore Ceslie Botello is also in JROTC and wants to enlist in the Air Force after graduation. She sub campuses at Vista Ridge.
“ROTC has helped me understand the pros and cons of the military and what I need to work on,” Botello said. “I need to start working out.”
Students also learn basic life skills through the program.
“I feel like I have become more responsible,” Abbott said. “I have expanded and become open to new ideas.”
