This year’s Grammys was an astonishing event. Many people were shocked by the results and went to social media to gossip. From nude red carpet outfits to jaw dropping “country” breakthroughs, this year’s Grammys will be one to remember.
To start us off, Doechii won a Grammy for Best Rap Album. As she walked on stage tears fell from her face. She explained that her winning makes her the third woman of all time to win this Grammy. The first was Lauryn Hill in 1999, then Cardi B in 2019 and now Doechii.
“I know that there is some black girl out there, so many black women out there that are watching me right now and I want to tell you, you can do it, anything is possible,” Doechii said in her final remarks on stage. “Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you, you can’t be here or that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic, or too loud. You are exactly who you need to be, to be where you are and I am a testimony.”
Chappell Roan also won a Grammy for Best New Artist and performed “Pink Pony Club.” Clad in an outfit that resembled Glinda the Good Witch, she started her speech by thanking Charli XCX for helping her get through the past year with her album “BRAT.” She then went on to criticize record labels and the lack of health insurance coverage for artists.
“I told myself that if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels in the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists, would offer a livable wage and health care, especially to developing artists,” Roan said.
Roan explained that because she got signed at a very young age, when she was dropped during the pandemic and had no job experience, she had a hard time finding a job and affording health insurance.
The most controversial part of the Grammys this year was the Album Of The Year Award. The nominations were “Brat” (Charli XCX), “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” (Chappell Roan), “Hit Me Hard and Soft” (Billie Eilish), “Cowboy Carter” (Beyonce), “New Blue Sun” (Andre 3000), “Short n’ Sweet” (Sabrina Carpenter), “The Tortured Poets Department” (Taylor Swift), “Djesse Vol. 4” (Jacob Collier).
Before the awards, social media was buzzing with theories of who will win this Grammy. I heard Taylor might win and I also heard Billie might win. In the end, “Cowboy Carter” was awarded the Album Of The Year award. In reaction, the crowd went crazy and people online went psycho. Many people were very upset, alleging that Beyonce paid for the Grammy or that the Grammys was scared of Beyonce due to her tie into the P. Diddy case, therefore giving Beyonce her first Album Of The Year Grammy and adding to her collection of a whopping 35 Grammys.
After the award was announced, the camera panned to Billie Eilish and showed her tearing up. Many people were outraged by this news, and I also think she was robbed for Album Of The Year. Eilish said in many interviews that she poured her heart and soul into the album. She exclaimed that it was her best work she’s ever made, and I’m inclined to agree. My other takeaway from the Grammys is I think people upped their fashion this year. I saw amazing red carpet looks from Doechii and Billie Eilish. Kendrick swept the Grammys this year for his song “Not Like Us” which I feel embarrassed Drake. Other than that I don’t think any of us will forget the events of this year’s Grammys.
