Mario Kart going mobile

Recently, Nintendo announced that a Mario Kart game made for mobile devices is currently in the works. Not much is known aside from a possible late 2018 to early 2019 release window.

During one of Nintendo’s strategy briefings, the company announced that they would be bringing Mario Kart to mobile devices. Details are sparse as Nintendo didn’t have a good deal of concrete information regarding the upcoming game. Following the release of other mobile games, Nintendo seems to be following through on their goal to release two to three titles on mobile platforms each year. The game is set for a release sometime before March of 2019. Nintendo’s latest word was a tweet made on January 31st that confirmed the name, “Mario Kart Tour”, and and gave an enthusiastic raising of the checkered flag.

Personally, I’m super excited for Nintendo’s future forays into the mobile gaming market. I am skeptical of the business model that Nintendo will use for Mario Kart Tour, as the game will be free to start with some kind of microtransaction system in place. I’m a huge fan of Mario Kart and the way it brings people together and then inevitably tears them apart, and hopefully the mobile market will work with what I love about the franchise. I’m hopeful that Mario Kart Tour can both capture and retain an audience, and I’m definitely going to try it out once it releases.
