Wrestling district champs again

On Feb. 3, Wrestling is participating in district competitions with the goal of winning district to advance onto regionals and bring back a title to our school.

Wrestling has been working in the weight room after school, our team has been preparing for a tough district-wide competition. At this event, multiple teams around LISD meet up and compete against each other to move onto Regionals. Our Wrestling program wants to go above and beyond what they did last year.

“Last year, we became District champions because two of us placed first and the rest of us placed second,” junior Morgan Bonvillian said. “We got to show that just because we’re new, it doesn’t mean we’re unexperienced.”

Going onto the wrestling mat can bring anxiety. Our athletes experience pressure before a game. But, the work they put into practicing comes into play as they go on against other teams.

“I get really nervous. It’s like my head’s racing and my palms are sweaty,” Bonvillian said. “As soon as you actually step on the mat and shake that girls hand, you don’t think about anything else besides winning and pinning her into the mat.”

We have the most diverse wrestlers on our team and in the end they all unite together to promote the expectations of our sports program.

“The coaches push us to do our best and allow us to fix our mistakes. It makes me a better wrestler,” freshman, Alex Neves said. “It’s a tight-knit group. Everybody knows each other and they’re always there to support and push us to do our best.”
