Movie Review: “Insidious: The Last Key” horrorably horrable

I saw “Insidious: The Last Key” over the weekend and it wasn’t very good. I haven’t seen the other Insidious movies, but that didn’t factor into my viewing at all. In all honesty, I thought the trailer was some kind of parody of modern horror movies, but it was totally serious and that sort of set the tone for the whole film.

“The Last Key” focuses on Elise Rainier, an elderly gifted psychic medium, and her paranormal investigation group. After receiving a call from a disturbed client, Elise is brought back to her childhood home in order to dispel the malevolent spirit that resides there. The plot thickens as Elise uncovers the true evil forces behind not only the current hauntings, but her own traumatic past as well.

I was pleasantly surprised at how solid the opening 30 minutes for the movie were. The characters were likable, and if anything the dialogue and interactions were charming enough to keep me somewhat interested. The problems really start to crop up when you look at the horror elements and the plot. For starters, the horror in this horror movie is incredibly played-out and generic. Jumpscares abound and it absolutely kills any tension. The plot, while it starts out strong, quickly becomes an absolute mess of contrived and downright silly moments. With a nonsensical plot and wholly ineffective horror elements, “Insidious: The Last Key” leaves nothing to reflect on and has nothing interesting enough to warrant a watch at the theater, and I would give it a 3 out of 10.
