Q&A: Swim coach and English teacher Katy Weeks is new AP

Why are you becoming an AP?

“I love working with students and I really believe that education opens doors for everyone. I also love that I get to work with a large group of students and get to know a whole grade level, and even a campus.”

What grade and or department are you going to be an AP?

“I will be working with sophomores next year (the current freshman). I am not sure of what academic department (I’ll be in charge of).”

Are there requirements to become a AP? If so what are they?

“To become an Assistant Principal, you have to have a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and be certified by the State. Must also have prior teaching experience in schools and have some leadership experience while you were a teacher. Not only is it a good idea to have this leadership experience but you have to want to be a leader in all areas of the school and be willing to work hard.”

Have you ever been an AP before?

“I was an Assistant Principal at Henry Middle School (next to Vista Ridge High School) for eight years before coming to Glenn HS this year.”

What do you think will be your biggest challenge?

“Knowing the names of every student in my grade level. It’s important to me that I do that, so if I go around asking what your name is, that’s why!”

Biggest responsibilities looking forward too?

“Being an Assistant Principal is a big job and I want to make sure I balance working with the students, the staff and the community.”
